Collisions in stop-start, slow moving traffic happen all-too frequently. Active City Stop is an advanced technology designed to help you avoid or reduce the severity of collisions at low speeds. It does this by continually measuring the distance to the vehicle in front when it is within a near range. If the system detects the vehicle in front has unexpectedly reduced speed, it automatically applies the brakes. If the driver intervenes to try to avoid the accident, Active City Stop will deactivate. Active City Stop has been granted a Euro NCAP Advanced Award for safety, emphasising its innovation. It is estimated that this technology could prove beneficial in around 5-9% of all car to car collisions.
How does it work?
A Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor is mounted at the top of the windscreen of your vehicle and scans the area ahead for obstacles. If a vehicle is detected in front that is braking, slow-moving or stationary, which could be part of a collision, the brakes are pre-charged. The car will apply the brakes automatically and reduce engine torque if the driver is inactive. Active City Stop will always aim to reduce speed prior to impact if it is unavoidable through braking alone, to reduce damage and prevent severe injury.
